Our experience with SimPPL (Arnav Deo, Mihir Panchal, Varad Prabhu, Prinkal Doshi) Our paths with SimPPL crossed on a 6:00 AM Zoom Call on a winter morning. We never expected it to take us on a wonderful journey of responsible computing and explainable AI.
Professional Workflow and Critical Reviews
It became quickly evident that this was not going to be a run of the mill, minimum-effort-only thing. This meant business, literally. We quickly settled into somewhat of a professional workflow, surrounded by meeting notes, calendar invites and action items. From the get-go, we got critical reviews of our proposals, which forced us to think and do deeper analysis before answering - a great value to learn.
Validation Through Industry Engagement
Once we had a clear idea of Engraph, we were tasked with validation, or rather getting answers to the question 'What does the industry need, and does our product solve any of their needs?'. With a developer-focused product, we employed not only surveys, but one-on-one interviews with professionals in our network. This included visiting watering-holes like Frappeverse and MumbaiFOSS 2024.
Refining Ideas Through Feedback
This helped us refine our idea, dropping unnecessary trinkets (that sounded cool to us, but were immediately shot down by our interviewees) and also extending features that were commonly requested. Then came viability - competitor research, market research and beachhead identification. This aided us in further refining our idea, and pivoting towards solving problems that competitors have missed out on.
Responsible Innovation Day
A special mention to the Responsible Innovation Day held at DJSCE in November 2024 - we received great insights from innovators such as Monik Pamecha and Jibu Elias. Being on the organizing end of it was a great experience as well!
MVP Development and Continuous Improvement
With a MVP churned out in a month's development time, we didn't stop. We reached out to our former interviewees for demonstrations and feedback. This also validated our own interpretations of their interviews, making sure our product aligned with their requirements. We switched from conceptual proposals to business decks - getting acquainted with corporate lingo was essential. We're still on the hunt for development partners and users, ensuring that our product solves their pain-points.
Reflection
In conclusion, our experience with SimPPL has been one of continuous learning, professional growth, and collaborative innovation - an adventure that none of us could have predicted a couple years ago, but which has enriched us far beyond our original expectations. We are grateful to our wonderful mentors, Swapneel Mehta, Dhara Mungra, and our fellow peers for making this journey one-of-a-kind.
